I
see the need for a Data Warehouse, but why do we need
NovaDatum?
| |
A Traditional
Data Warehouse assumes that all Data is available, and
just needs to be put into one area, for easy retrieval,
but this is not the case for Financial Trading Institutions
as we shall now attempt to show
| |
In the beginning
there were only a few traded products and these could
be handled by a relatively small number of applications.
| |
However as things became
more complicated and Derivatives emerged, additional systems
were acquired which were very difficult to interface to
the incumbent systems. |
| |
In this more
complicated marketplace, organisations started to think
about risk and profitability, and in due course so did
the regulators. This led to individuals being charged
with the responsibility of looking after these areas.
| |
The first thing these
people required was access to information. However, this
was not very easy. Initially the IT department put them
on the network and gave them a connection to all of the
systems that had any information that they required. |
| |
So one of these
departments obtained a budget to build a Data Warehouse,
and although crude, it helped a great deal. Then, everybody
else wanted one and more departmental databases were eventually
set up. However, as these were implemented at a departmental
level they were not integrated with the operational workflow
so data integrity was lost.
| |
The users soon found
that this did not solve their problems as there was no consistency
between the various systems. This type of solution does
not address such issues as a single reference for a customer
across the organisation. |
| |
So
how does NovaDatum
help?
| |
NovaDatum
sits as a middle office system within the operational
workflow. It provides benefits to both the day to day
operation and the 'Power Users' who need to monitor Risk
and Profitability, and, it does all of this on a Global
Real Time basis. Because NovaDatum
links to all of your current systems you can change any
of your front or back office systems, without changing
your information support structure.
| |
Another way to look
at NovaDatum
is to see how the data is currently viewed. The transactions
for different products can only be seen as disparate information.
No proper consolidation can take place. |
| |
However, with NovaDatum
you can see all of your information across all products
in a consistent format. From customer exposures to Global
exchange risks (including exposure taken on as part of
the derivatives book).
